With the 2020 Olympics taking place in Tokyo, we wanted to take a moment to look at the upcoming gymnastics events. With three categories of competition, artistic gymnastics is closely related to our programs and areas of practice here at Nashua School of Gymnastics New Hampshire.

Artistic gymnastics

The discipline of gymnastics in which athletes perform short routines is known as artistic gymnastics. With the use of different apparatuses, the typical routine lasts an average of 30 to 90 seconds. Athletes are judged on their execution, level of difficulty, and the overall presentation of their skill set. Although the guidelines are the same for both men and women, the events differ as follows:

Both Men and Women

With little difference between the men’s and women’s categories, the success of a vault performance depend on several different elements. From the speed of the run and body rotation to the kinesthetic awareness in the air, each and every movement defines the level of difficulty and success of the event.

Floor Routine

One of the most popular events during the gymnastics events is the floor routine. A series of tumbling showcases the athlete’s strength, balance, flexibility, and skill set. While both men and women use the same floor to perform their choreographed routines, the men’s routine typically lasts one minute while the women extend for 90 seconds and incorporate both music and dance.

Men Only

Based upon the generalization that men typically have greater upper body strength than women, the following categories have been named men’s only events for them to showcase this strength:

  • Horizontal Bars
  • Parallel Bars
  • Rings
  • Pommel Horse

Women Only

Because men tend to be taller than women, the following two categories have proven to be challenging. Thus, the balance beam and uneven bars have been categorized as women’s only. Not only is height a factor, but the fact that women tend to have greater lower body strength which is required for these two apparatuses.
